The First Step

Interview with a volunteer

My Experience with the Idaho Humane Society
I personally love the Idaho Humane Society. I believe that what they are doing is promoting social justice just like any non profit that fights against oppression of people. I have made many visits to the Idaho Humane Society and have thouroughly enjoyed each time. Everyone who works there is very nice and the whole environment is friendly. You can go into the kennels and look at the dogs as well as other areas with cats and bunnies. They have a big grass field outside and smaller rooms inside that you can take animals into to play with. That is what I have done during my visits. My friends I would go look at all the dogs and you can really see on some of their faces that they have been neglected in the past. It is great taking them outside and running around and seeing how much they enjoy it. My only problem with making visits to the Humane Society is that I almost take a new dog home everytime I leave.
A good friend of mine regularly volunteers at the Idaho Humane Society and has also adopted a dog from it. I talked to him about his experience and he had nothing but great things to say. He makes appearances at the humane society a lot, sometimes just to play with the dogs. He said that he always feels better when he leaves, knowing that he got to show some love to animals that may not have experienced that before. It also reminds him that he needs to put the same energy into helping fight oppression against people. He also admitted that it is a lot harder to fight oppression against people, but that the humane society is what got him thinking that he needs to. His experience, he told me, with adopting a dog was also great. He said that he feels great knowing that he helped an abused animal and that he cannot even imagine the feeling you would get fighting against oppression against people.
Abuse against animals may not seem like a big issue amidst all the oppression people face, but supporting the fight against animal cruelty and supporting the Idaho Humane Society is a great way to start fighting oppression. It is hard to break away from the cycle that tells you to just go with the flow and mind your own business. Adopting, donating or volunteering at the Humane Society is a great first step. It is also a great way to find an awesome new pet who hasn't gotten to experience a loving owner yet. Head down to the Idaho Humane Society and you will not be able to resist. They currently have an overflow of animals waiting to be adopted.
The current Idaho Humane Society was created in June of 1941 by three women who were fed up with cruelty against animals. These women were apalled by the conditions at the local pound and how the animals were treated. Animals there were often time shot and left to decompose, they had insufficient food and water and the overall living conditions were pathetic. They went to the Idaho Statesmen and got a front page article which resulted in a lot of furious people. These women ended up taking over the pound and formed the Idaho Humane Society, where they could properly care for the animals. These women fought against oppression against animals and made a huge difference. The same principles can be applied to oppression against people. Challenge injustice when you see it. Do not just stand by and let it happen because doing that is just as bad as being the one to commit the unjust act.
